The nor'easter came and went quickly, just a big wallop. A fleeting blanket of white, then it was gone. And with it, brother Stormy. Through snow, sleet, and dusk, Stormy hopped up into the car, with a bag of food, treats, and new leash, and slipped off to his forever home.

We miss you, big cry baby. Be well, be loved, and have a great life!

As for the rest of us, some whiteness still remains...

Be afraid, be VERY afraid! Look who's coming... it's THOR!

We used to know him as little Ricky, but he's a big, bruisin' Marvel superhero now! Thankfully, he did not bring his hammer because he's too big as it is, and he keeps bumping into stuff--like us!The blond god's not here to stay, though, just stopping through again on his journey of life. This time, he's had a bit of bad luck. His adopter, you see, recently went through a buncha personal setbacks (lotta that goin around). He called us because he said he needed to find Thor a new home--and he was really sad about it. The guy's moving (just left, actually) for the West coast and couldn't afford to take Thor with him. Literally. He could not afford to transport him cross country. :( Wait, we thought, maybe a rescue transport would be willing to help get Thor to his new home... SO, if any rescue transporters see this, we need HELP!
In the meantime, all's good here. Who said 13 is an unlucky number?! In fact, we might be trading one white dog for another. Don't wanna jinx anything, but Stormy will be visiting a prospective adopter next week. If all works out, he'll have a very special nine-year old girl to call his own. It's only fitting since Stormy is so sweet and special himself. Sniff.

Interlopers! Who are these guys?! (Yeah, no, not us, hope no one forgot what we look like!) Sheesh, you leave your blog for a month or three, and some crazy mutts butt in and take over!Truth be told, these guys aren't just taking over the blog--they've moved into the house! Golden boy is Sammy and li'l miss is Angel, named after our very own. :) They're rooming with girl friend Frances Jean--no relation to Ethel Jean --picture forthcoming.

The trio, plus brother JoJo, comprise our dog sanctuary Free to Be Dog Haven. The sanctuary isn't supposed to actually be up and running until we move to our farm (more on that in a later post), but "someone" has been impatient, as usual. Long story short: we got a full house. More like bursting at the seams--and let us tell you, cheaper by the dozen it ain't. The more the merrier, right?Anyway, we're all here, one big, merry bunch. But this is no permanent deal, okay? Sammy, Frances, and Angel need their forever homes! If anyone is interested, they can contact us through our website or go through the Delaware SPCA, where all these guys are from.

And don't forget brother Stormy(not pictured here)--he's available, too! Through Echo Dogs White Shepherd Rescue!

How ya gonna keep 'em down on the farm?, part 2

Look where we went!Little Theo got to navigate up to the Finger Lakes to check out this awesome farm for sale. We've been so jealous of Tucker's farm that we want one of our own! Whaddya think? There's crazy cold, snowy winters up there in New York, but we would have so much land to run around on. And summer on those acres would be amazing... Sigh. There's even a pond and creek and some woods. Lotsa playin to be had!Not only that, but we'd get us some SHEEPS! :) Yeah, not like these guys in the pics--we'd have cute, fuzzy ones. (But we'd kinda be okay if some of the goats wanna stay...)
We'd have our own little Beekman Mansion, though it wouldn't be a mansion. And we would need a Farmer John! Not only that, we'd finally be able to have all these foreign dogs move out of the house and have a house of their own. Theo doesn't like sharing!Besides, communing with nature is more our style. We're not into rushing, you know. :) Most important, Narra sure looks good in the country! (Actually, she looks good everywhere!)

Ah, we love seeing little Tucker's cute face! Three weeks ago today, we took our little bro all the way down state for a trial run at a new forever home. Tucker and his new peeps had some issues, but we set scaredy boy straight, and all seems okay now--we're gonna call it a GO! Actually, don't call it a forever home--it's a forever FARM! Our boy done good: he's living on a 15-acre farm with a new border collie/lab bro! (And cats!) Most important, his new family loves him lots. They better love him as much as we do!
We miss you, baby bro--but we're happy for you. Have a wonderful, happy life!!

Scored the Ten Spot!

Just when nine started to feel normal, we find ourselves back at TEN! (And if Uncle Kidlat visits, we'll be 11 again!) Sigh. Good and bad, we suppose. Narra's new admirer is JoJo, a 7-year old DE SPCA parolee with a penchant for cranky behavior.

You can hardly blame him, though. His family lost their home due to the economy, and, after that, the family broke up. The only home JoJo ever knew was gone. When he ended up at the shelter, JoJo had a really hard time: it was so loud and busy, and with no one to pay special attention to him. JoJo missed his house, his couch, and his kids. In his confusion and anxiety, he's had a particularly hard time trusting new people. He feels alone and is always guarded. We thought he'd be okay when he went to his first foster home, but it wasn't his home, and JoJo took out some of his frustration on his foster dad. :(So JoJo ended up at the shelter again, and his health declined even worse. Not to mention his morale. The shelter did everything they could to find the right place where JoJo could recuperate and start anew, but no help could be found. JoJo's time at the shelter had run out.So, apparently, somewhere in our "papers," we must have an extended moniker that includes the name St. Jude--because someone has mistaken us as a savior for hopeless cases! Well... where else was JoJo gonna go?? Anyway, we'll make the most of it and help as best we can. And we hope that some day the right home will come along for JoJo, and he can leave his past behind him and be happy again.

In the meantime, at least he's easy on the eyes. But make no mistake, we're not sharing any bacon.

Historic!

These have been some trying times... You might've guessed as much from our blogging absence (but then again, who'd miss our inconsistent bloggin?). First, we suffered a major loss: our trusty ride--those special wheels that took us on innumerable adventures--finally succumbed after 222K miles. RIP, baby. But we got a new ride! It's sweet! A younger, peppy-er version of our dearest, not a replacement, just new (er, used)--welcome to the fold!

Anyway, we finally got to take it out! Um, not all of us, just the anointed ones, Narra and Tuchuck. Destination: Valley Forge National Historic Park, old stomping grounds of brothers Tsamba and Buko--and baby Narra, back in the day.Speaking of old stomping grounds, we thought Valley Forge was an ideal spot for us to march in solidarity with our homeys back in Wisconsin! They've got quite a battle on their hands, and they're fighting for history! Not to mention collective bargaining rights and workers' rights, in general. We won't even get into corporate greed, public services, etc. Oh, humans, why are you like this?? On Wisconsin! In the name of "Fighting Bob" Lafolette!

On a more pleasant note, doesn't Tuchuck look like our buddy Norwood in this (blurry) picture?!Sure felt great to be out there again, for sure. But, next time, can we all go? And can we get rid of those damn leashes? We promise not to chase the deer--promise!

New gal pal Rosie is a husky Husky--just more to love! And she's just full of love, too! She stopped by briefly on her way to Virginia, to our new friends at Pet Harbor rescue.She has a new name: Posi, and she's all set to embark on a whole new world. After two stints at the Delaware SPCA, she's onto the promise of a better life. She's 8-years young, loves everybody: kids, cats, dogs, and is super fun and affectionate. Hey, we really wanted her to stay here! But if you know anyone who's worthy of her, send them to Pet Harbor!But we want to know--yet again--how come only Narra and Tuchuck get to be on the welcoming committee?! (Not that the rest of us want more committee work...)

In our quest for a more dapper 2011, big bro Tanner joined the fashion forward with a bold and elegant collar choice. He's the strong, silent type so didn't go in for the bright, colorful statement the collies made.This pattern from Bison Designs is called "Tribal." We're all about that, dude, we're totally the TRIBE (minus the racist overtones and mascot)! (The collies' collars, btw, come from a Sun Valley outfit called A Tail We Could Wag.)Sister Narra loves her sharp-dressed bros! We think Tim Gunn would approve. :)

What's down in the dark will be brought to the light

We watched 2010 ride off into the sunset--literally. Actually, we were so inspired by Mattie Ross, Rooster Cogburn, and especially Joel and Ethan Coen, that we wanted to get a jump start on a gritty 2011, full of action, adventure, and brilliant writing. At the very least, we wanted to get out while the human's knees could still manage a reasonable bend. As it turned out, those feeble knees didn't get moving til late (as usual), so we ended up going for a walk where we knew we could at least enjoy the sunset. An expansive natural resource area is pretty close to our house--but far enough that we get to rev up the van--and it does showcase spectacular sunsets, New Year's eve or not.
Going out was also a good way for Tuchuck and Theo to show off their cool new collars. Another resolution for 2011: be more dapper (cuz we really can't get better lookin). Then again, dusk doesn't offer the best light for admiring snazzy duds. So we just ran around for a bit, resisted the temptation to chase deer--ahem--and watched 2010 fade away.You might notice, at this point, that not everyone got to go. :( Boo! The human promises that 2011 will bring a more equitable distribution of fun to the pack, but we remain unconvinced. We get that sistah Narra gets to do everything--and the rest of us can live with that--but, c'mon, boys just wanna have fun, too!Anyway, brutha Theo was happy for the ride and the horse-poop eating, plus he enjoyed the dubious distinction of New Year's eve at Uncle Kidlat's house… While Uncle Kidlat can be quite demanding, extremely vocal, and incapable of pausing, he did get more snow than we did--so snow zoomies were a big bonus! We'd like more of that in 2011, too, please.
And we'd like less losses. We lost our Angel and Wally, as well as beloved humans: our human's "surrogate grandma" and the Peppy Sheppys' Gramps. We have other friends who suffered a lot of losses, too; our thoughts are with them always, and we're hoping for a stupendous 2011 for everyone. In fact, we're determined to make this year the BEST!

After a little nap. And perhaps a snack or two...And BACON. Oh, yeah, definitely need more bacon in 2011.

You can call him Doctor Supah Stahr!! Oh, yeah, brother Tuchuck rocked the agility trial again--he is now a man of letters! They may not be "PhD," but his letters actually mean he can do something (heehee)! To recap: he qualified in all four of his runs this weekend, with two first places, a second, and a third. And, more important, he earned his Novice Agility (standard) title in three consecutive outings. Paging Dr. Tuchuck... we're swooning! Way to go, brah!

As for Narra, that elusive jumpers title remains just out of reach. She was so close today--just one knocked bar away! Oh, well, she still has her blue ribbon from yesterday and is now one step closer. Maybe it'll happen next weekend!

Call me Q... DOUBLE Q!

No, Tuchuck's not "Q" because of a long unspoken affection for Captain Jean Luc Picard... (Haha, kidding! We're not really that geeky--okay, maybe a little geeky) Nor for scientific brilliance in inventing spy paraphernalia! Neither are we the politicized offspring of the Stonewall riots (okay, maybe somewhat).

Dog sports-ters know that "Q" stands for a qualifying score--three of which add up to a title in various AKC (and other) performance events. (Okay, as much as we don't really believe in external validation of this sort, it does feel kinda good!) In agility, the hallowed Double Q is traditionally achieved when a team qualifies in the events of standard agility and agility jumpers with weaves in the same day. And, now, we're very excited to report that brother Tuchuck double Q'd today!!! Our first EVAH! WOOHOO!!! Even sistah Narra with all her agility experience has never accomplished a double Q! And Tuchuck did it with one first place and one second place!

Not to be outdone, however, Narra earned a blue ribbon of her own! She Q'd in jumpers--which has been her nemesis from day 1. We're getting there! Go, sistah, go, sistah! Guess the human's not such a detriment after all. :)

As our friends know, our motley crew here has traveled many different paths. At one point or another, however, for many us, our paths led us through the Delaware SPCA. Brother Buko was our first illustrious alumnus from this shelter, and we continue to share our home with brothers and sisters in need from there.

Now we can follow all the comings and goings on the Delaware SPCA's new blog! Check it out, and see all the awesome animals waiting to go home. (We should mention that our best buds over at Wally's blog are helping to get the word out on the shelter's blog as well. Way to go, guys!!)

A new record!

Whew, time to exhale! We've had a very full last month... First, our human left us--again--and we had to be separated. :( As if being left behind wasn't bad enough, bros Tanner and Stormy actually had to go to JAIL, as in BEHIND BARS!! Bad human, BAD! The rest of us were good for our dogsitter Heidi, though--this time--meaning no fights, no jumping the fence, no other types of shenanigans. When we finally got back together, little Theo had become so anxious that he started, well, you know, *leaking* all over the house (again). And before we could even get back to normal, Uncle Kidlat came to visit! (His humans went some place called Turkey. Mmm, sounds delicious to us--we'll take ours ground and raw, please!)So we were TEN again. Operative word being "were"... because in a matter of days, this dude moved into the studio! (Yo, blue eyes, chillax, way too intense! And, hey, what's the hurry?!) His name is Lucky (though he hasn't been of late, or even of early, we suppose), and he's our latest foster bro. (That's three foster bros in the house now, in case anyone is counting.) Apparently, he was a little off the hook in the shelter and needed some place to chill. ("Lucky" for him the weather just turned, haha!) Not like he's any more on the hook here; we haven't even be able to meet him yet because he's got so much to learn still. Maybe someone else out there can teach him?! He's available for adoption through the Delaware SPCA.

Anyway, yes [deep breath, exhale], Lucky makes us ELEVEN--that's a record for us!
Luckily (haha!), our record number ended just today because Uncle Kidlat went home. Finally. He's fun and all, but he was terrorizing Stormy--he doesn't like the longleggers--so we had to do our yard outings in three shifts!
Yeah, well, this is how we should look... Seven. Our number is Seven. (Do you see everyone? Minus foster bros.)

We thought we were in for rough skies, but the forecast says the bad clouds have cleared away. We hope that's true! We don't mind the current conditions, even though it is... Stormy! Woohoo! That's new foster bro Stormy in da house!

He was really scared when he first arrived, but he's starting to come around. He was REALLY scared of the human (haha, how ridiculous is that?!). He was even too scared to walk around the yard. Anyway, he's starting to feel more comfortable, so we're helping him along.

He has a bit to learn about sharing still, but we think he'll eventually get it. Other than that, he seems like a real catch. If you know anyone who might be interested, Stormy's available for adoption through Echo Dogs White Shepherd Rescue. BTW, his Petfinder page says he's in Illinois, but, trust us, he's here!

Oh, yeah, sistah's crazy! But wouldn't you be without some serious play for over a year?! Narra hasn't competed in agility since the German Shepherd Dog nationals last fall. And Tuchuck's just getting his agility life under way...
Both had a super fun weekend (well, at least one day of it) at a USDAA agility trial. And, well, in all modesty, Tuchuck kicked some serious bootie. He brought home the booty as well: two blue ribbons! Narra didn't bring the loot, but she always feeds the need for speed!!

Short-legged Revolution

Discrimination! Discrimination, we say! Yes, little Duncan and little Tucker absconded with the human to Uncle Kidlat's house today, leaving the big dogs in their dust.
What they did there is anyone's guess, but we fear they're plotting short-legged revolution. Our friends the Peppy Sheppys already warned us that corgis seek world domination. Uncle Kidlat may well have joined their ranks and is now recruiting under-30lb accomplices (wait, is Uncle Kidlat under 30lbs?!).

Look, they were practicing paw-to-paw combat! Brace yourselves, these guys mean business!

How many is TEN??

What're we, the Hotel New Hampshire?! Who's that lying in our bed?? You might not recognize the little orange ball there (uh, because he's supposed to be GONE), but that's Tucker--from the SPCA--yes, he's still here. That makes us EIGHT in the house. Oh, but he ain't stayin'! We just don't know when he's leavin'...And you remember Buddy (#2), our senior guest. We drove him all the way to his new (foster?) home... And our human was sad. But Buddy made us NINE...
Then there was sweet, little Dulce. She coulda been Uncle Kidlat's new sister, but he didn't play his cards right. In fact, he didn't play right at all. So she made a pitstop at our house before going to her new home. All turned out really well because she was reunited with her brother, and they get to live happily ever after! (Except that she was renamed Bella... and her brother is Edward. Ew. Well, they were never gonna "get together" anyhow.) She made us TEN! Again. (Remember Milo?)
And, as it turns out, Uncle Kidlat just doesn't play well with others. Period. He tried another possible sibling, but that didn't work out either. Well, not for Uncle Kidlat. Turned out pretty well for the pretty baby, though. He doesn't have a name yet, but he has an awesome new home with super sibs and his very own GranNE! And, if all goes right, he may very well be named after an extraordinary John Irving character! (Cast your vote!)
Now the baby didn't really add to our number, he just waited in the driveway...
Okay, you keeping track? Hope so, because see this white blur with Tuchuck? That's Finn. Sometimes referred to as Finnegan. He's half of Finn and Liberty (sometimes referred to as Libby), two overnight guests from Echo Dogs White Shepherd Rescue. They're with us right now, so that brings us to TEN again. But they'll be on their way bright and early in the morning.

Tucker says, "See ya, wouldn't wanna be ya.. Bwahahaha!"TEN again. Begin again... :)

Meet our buddy Barack! As you can see, he's a very happy guy--even though he has been at the animal shelter for a VERY long time. :( He's super sweet and super energetic. And don't let the polls fool you, he's also super popular! We can't understand why he hasn't gotten adopted yet!!! Tell your friends! This guy's a catch!

Our second Buddy

Brother Buddy preceded almost all of us: he was one of the original four (with Brothers Tsamba, Buko, and Jackson), so the name is very special to us. Now, for the first time ever, we've agreed to share the name... with another very special, senior guy.

Our second Buddy--our second houseguest--barely escaped euthanasia at the shelter. The shelter folks are kind and thought his health issues were so severe that they could spare him some suffering. Unfortunately, they didn't really have the resources to test or confirm Buddy's condition. Well, we wanted to know for sure, so Buddy visited our vet for a complete examination and a blood test... and GOOD NEWS! Buddy "just" suffers from old guy stuff (Jackson knows what that's like). He was just very depressed and stressed in the shelter. Out of it, he has become very lively and fun. He's gotta lotta livin left to do!

But Tuchuck wants to know: "Dude, what's up with those ears?!"

Buddy's story already has a happy ending. In a few days, he'll be off to a regular foster home (ours is TOO FULL!) with German Shepherd Rescue of Southeastern Pennsylvania who already has a prospective adopter waiting to meet him! Good luck, Buddy, we've enjoyed getting to know you (and our human is going to miss you lots)!

Even shepherds don't scream like this guy! Be glad you can't hear him over the internet!! Our world is shattered--just like our ear drums--since little Tucker came to town. We thought he was only visiting, so how come he's still here? The shelter closes in four hours, dude, shouldn't Tucker be going back now??Seriously, though, he's settled down a bit, even walked the yard with all of us (Tucker on leash). He'll probably be okay in time, but, um, time's up, isn't it?

Tell your friends to adopt Tucker! Please!

Un-pack-ing

Our human's back, and so are we! Thanks to all our friends who patiently checked in on us--repeatedly--only to find out we were being lame, er, that our human was being lame by not updating our blog.

To be perfectly honest, we're ashamed to blog about our latest activities because, well, in our human's absence, we sorta lost it, to say the least. The pic of big bro Tanner is evidence... We're very sorry to say that a bunch of us *cough*[collies!] went a little crazy one night and attacked him. For whatever reason, we went all Lord of the Flies: rules forsaken, order lost--and an innocent suffering for it. Tanner was ripped up pretty bad, but he's healing well now. His left ear will never stand again, and his debonair handsomeness has given way to a kind of goofy cuteness. (He kinda reminds us of Montgomery Clift after his car accident--though we wouldn't call Monty's post-accident looks "goofy cuteness." And Tanner seems to be bouncing back better than Monty did!)

The human was completely freaked out, and we all thought that our pack would be disbanded. Fortunately, we've pulled ourselves together, and so far, so good. Keep your fingers and paws crossed for us! Really, we were freaked out, too--how dare he leave us for so long?!

Although our pack is still intact, we've had our share of comings and goings nonetheless. For one, Uncle Kidlat came to stay with us for a while! No, that pic is not his going Lord of the Flies on Tuchuck--just us having fun with the little emperor, as usual. :)
A couple weeks back, Tuchuck also made a new lady friend--this is Luna. She spent the night at our house (no, nothing salacious! you guys!) on her way to her new home! (Thanks to Echo Dogs White Shepherd Rescue!)

Our SPCA buddy Tucker got to hang out with Uncle Kidlat, too! Tucker's a cattle dog mix who's getting all adoptable so he can go to a forever home like ours. But not exactly OURS! If you know anybody looking for a cute, high energy boy, send them to Tucker's webpage!
And, lastly, our biggest "pack" news of all: Uncle Kidlat may be getting a new baby sister! Look at this pretty girl with him... We're calling her Dulce (Auntie Dulce??!), and she's just a baby Cardi from CompAnimals Pet Rescue. She's staying with Uncle Kidlat for a week--maybe she'll like him by the end of it!

Whew! That was a lot! Sorry, guess that's what happens when you don't blog for so long. We'll try to do better from now on. We actually have more to talk about! But we'll wait til next time. :) Thanks for visiting our blog!

We've been missing our sistah Angel... who knew seven dogs could feel so much less than eight? Bro Tanner is carrying on Angel's legacy, though; he has inherited her butterfly collar! Not such a bad deal: Angel only ever wore that collar once--for a photo shoot! She woulda looked pretty in anything, but she was particularly fetching with those brightly colored butterflies around her. Now, Tanner is trying to do the collar justice--and maybe tone down that bad-boy look of his! :)

Our one-year anniversary passed quietly on April 29, probably because Angel seemed like she'd always been here. She couldn't have been any more loved or any more a part of us had she been born in this house. She was certainly born to be part of us. She was sweet, she was tough, and she played the hand she was dealt. She loved to snuggle and hug, she loved to wroo wroo, and she loved food. When she got her new harness, she flew like Superman. Oh, yeah, that's what we're talkin 'bout... but just a one-nighter! Handsome fellow, eh? This guy's Milo, and we're givin him a place for the night as he makes his way from NC to NH. He's just battled heartworm and can be quite shy, but we've seen the potential pizazz! Just look at him handle prey. Way to go, dude! Once Milo is fully healthy, he'll be available for adoption through Echo Dogs White Shepherd Rescue.
Actually, what we mean to say is that Milo makes us a perfect 10 for the night. Um, that's us eight, plus Uncle Kidlat who's visiting for a while, and Milo! We think we make a pretty good 10--what do you think?!

Oh, and just so there's no confusion, when we say "us eight," we're really talking about us SEVEN, plus FOSTER Duncan. Because Duncan's just a foster dog, okay? That means we're just fostering Duncan...

[Yawn] [Stretch] Ahh... Haha, we don't really spend our days like this, but there seems to have been a proliferation of beds at our house this week. (Hm... Could someone be trying to make amends for neglecting our blog?!) Not that we're complaining. We enjoy an indulgently long nap as much as the next guy. And, truth be told, we kinda earned it this week. The house has been a bit crazy with comings and goings. For whatever reason, we seem to be training for something cuz we're back in full swing: agility, herding, and obedience! Training's fine and all--fun even--but the human could use a little training himself. We're talkin some serious gym time. Hear that, tubby? If we're gonna be doing all this running around, you better keep up. In other words, we'll do the naps, human will do the laps. Hahaha!
On a separate note, beautiful Sophie has asked for gory details; the following may be inappropriate for younger children...

Keep in mind that we're not into all the religion stuff, but what humans call Holy Week seemed a perfectly reasonable time to ponder our relationship to the body and blood. Um, of bunnies, of course (duh--Easter!).

One night--was it Good Friday?--the human was earnestly working, doors were open, and we were enjoying a beautiful night in our yard. Our boy soon realized that we hadn't come in to check on him for a while and decided he should check on us. He stepped outside just in time to hear the horrifying scream of an innocent being slaughtered at the far end of the yard. He grabbed a flashlight and went running. Shining the light toward the brush, all he could see was our glowing eyes bouncing up and down like wolves in a movie. Theo was in the lead, proudly shaking a kinda large cottontail rabbit in his mouth. Duncan was right behind, trying to grab the catch. Then came Tanner, holding his big, red ball (doofus), and Rousseau, not really knowing what to do. Our human screamed like a girl, and the pack raced into the house, rabbit flailing. Theo landed the prize in his crate and proceeded to rip him some tender morsels. What followed was mayhem, comedy of tragic proportions. We eventually acquiesced to being crated and allowed the human to gather himself and clear the crime scene. Um, "clean" rather than "clear would be more appropriate. Suffice it to say that whoever had hands had blood on them. And, apparently, there are really no good tools for this sort of situation.

Alas, our Easter meal was thwarted, but the entertainment was some salvation. Next time we'll order up some Chianti and fava beans to go along.
Our bunny escapade was, of course, inspired by the Peppy Sheppys' squirrel adventure (with apologies to their ma ape). On the side of might makes right, however, we'd like to support our dear friend Ethel Jean in her campaign to assume the seat of retiring Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens. Ethel is black and female and probably open to all kinds of activities that would sufficiently offend conservatives--she has our vote! SCOTUS! SCOTUS! (Sorry, Otis, no more Scalias!)

Our little secret

In our failure to blog recently, we have also failed to make a proper introduction... let's remedy that: meet Duncan! He's our latest little addition! He's a little border collie mix who has been living with us for just over a month now. His family lost their home and ended up at a no-pets homeless shelter. They tried to hide Duncan in a little crate outside, but the poor guy had no food or water--or room to move around. When he was discovered by animal control, the officers took him to the shelter for care.

Unfortunately, Duncan was very fearful at the shelter. He scared people with his intense border collie eyes and growling. When the shelter folks realized he couldn't be adopted out directly, our human brought him home. We were dubious at first--especially Theo--but we've come around to accepting him. Still, we're just helping along until he goes to his forever home. Prospective adopters can inquire about him through the Delaware SPCA.

Duncan's done a great job learning house rules, and he totally fits in now. He's even become better about meeting new people and other dogs. He can still be kinda scary, but only because he's very vocal. He talks big, but we know he's really an okay guy. He's also really fast and has springy feet! The human thinks he'd be a great agility dog for someone!

Anybody still visiting our blog?? If you are, THANKS!!! Yet again, we can place the blame solely on our human. Granted, he has actually been busy, but c'mon, is he our boy or not?! We've been kinda busy, too. Narra and Tuchuck are fully immersed in agility training again, and Theo just graduated from his beginning obedience class. And now he's going to start agility, too! Some of you know that we also have a dirty, little secret named Duncan who's been taking up space in the house (and bed and lap...).

Anyway, we find time to have fun, too. Narra got some quality one-on-one time with the human in celebration of spring's arrival--and snow's departure. We all need a little more quality time, not just training, okay? And some extended warm, sunny, DRY weather would be welcome, too!

We've had a sad and tearful morning--we said goodbye to the biggest hearted guy we'll ever know. Our best bud Wally had to find some place bigger for that heart of his, that mortal frame just couldn't contain it anymore. He's free to spread his love now, but we'll miss his big head, his big personality and his big sense of humor. One more razzie for the road, dude? January's been dreary and kinda boring. Our human's off this time of year, and we usually do something fun--so how come we just hangin at home? (More to the point, how come the human's not been keeping up with our blog?? Or visiting all our bloggin buddies?!) Well, we've been content to play in our yard. You can see all the (chewed up) balls strewn about; we're not usually lacking for toys, that's for sure.Once in a while, though, a dog needs a little more mental stimulation, especially at dusk, when we're primed for the hunt, ready to HOWL. You might notice an odd, yellow thingy there with all the balls--that was Tuchuck's way of stimulating our minds... and primordial selves. What object serves such purposes, you ask? ... YES! Tuchuck raided the human's library, and now we're inspired to roll! Load up the van, boy, let's get the flock outta here! Road trip!!! ARROOOOOOO!!!!! Well, in our dreams--or the summer, whichever comes first.

What is normal?

Ah, goodbye 2009--glad to see you go. We've lost friends, and friends of friends, both human and canine. Others certainly had it worse than we did, but the year wasn't great regardless. What does 2010 have in store? We hope it's lotsa good stuff. Now that the holidays have passed, as things get back to "normal," we're wondering if the holiday season portended anything for the coming decade?

We (Jacks, Narra, Tuchuck, and Theo) spent Christmas day with Kidlat at his house. We still had snow, so romping was definitely in order. We hope for more snow in 2010--just enough to be fun--and some crazy romping, without a doubt.

That same day, however, when the humans had their Christmas party, we were sequestered downstairs. We certainly hope--nay, we demand--this practice not become a habit.

New Year's Eve was just for us, at home, together. Uneventful but relaxing and way fun just bein about us. Even though we covet each other's stuff, we know we each have ours, as it should be.

We finally got a fire built, too. So nice and warm. It also reminded us of Montana and the mountains. We look forward to being there again this year. Nothing quite like exploring mountain trails by day and snuggling by a fire at night. Road trip!!!

Is it true that how you ring in the new year is how you'll spend it? If so, our evening was about being together, a crackling fire, a pint of Guinness, and watching Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. Hm, what does that portend...???

"...he's gotta be fast, and he's gotta be fresh from the fight..."(Um, let's not mention fights, okay?) Here he is! This is new foster bro Tristan. We picked him up on the way home from the cape a couple weeks ago. We've actually had a bit of adjusting to do. Tristan doesn't speak "dog" really well, and we've had to learn how to interact with each other. Big bro Tanner and Tristan have had particular "issues," but they're doing okay.

We're all managing as you can see. And Tristan is starting to kinda fit in. He's still got lots to learn (like how to play), but we've learned a little patience, too. He's become really attached to the human, though we find him kinda annoying because he always wants attention. Tristan is another Echo dog, so if you know anyone wanting to adopt a big, goofy--albeit physical--white shepherd, please direct them there.

His Isolde must be out there somewhere...

WOOHOO!!! Look where we went last weekend... Cape Cod!Okay, more on that in a second. We've got some updating to do... First, some of you more observant types might have noticed that Tanner appears in Harley's video, even AFTER he was supposed to have gone home. Well, it's a sad story, and we'll make it short: Tanner's previous family tried to take him back, but they just couldn't make it work. Not through any fault of Tanner's, but those people have some things to work out among themselves. We're not sayin, we're just sayin. Anyway, big bro Tanner is back home with us--again. And we're happy to have him.

Okay, what about all these beach pics, you ask? Funny you should mention that...We actually went up to the Cape to take Harley to his new home! Yup, our little boy has moved on. Sigh. We miss him, but he's in a terrific home. We know for a fact because we visited there. The people were super nice: they gave us toys and food and everything! And they didn't even care that we made a royal mess of their house. They loved it!! You see, they lost their white shepherd in October, and they haven't had a dog in their house since. They said FOUR is FUN! Heehee...

Harley's livin large now, on the sea, bein a harbormaster, er, a harbormaster's dog. Watch out for him standing guard on the poop deck! Have fun, Harley boy, we miss you!
After saying goodbye to Harley, we had to take the opportunity to play a bit. We found a great B&B in Hyannis that welcomes dogs, so we told the human to pull right on up and check us in! We didn't get to spend that much time there because there were too many beaches to check out--and so little time. Why is it always like that?

As usual, we missed the guys back home, but we still had fun!

BTW, lest we get too comfortable without Harley, we pulled off the interstate on our way home and picked up new foster bro Tristan. More on him later...

We know that Venice has lots of water, but what do they put in it??? Cuz when the human came back, we got a new foster bro!!! Meet Harley...He's a 10-month old GSD who was removed from a "troubled" home. We don't know the nature of the trouble, but it musta been bad, the authorities removed all the animals--and the kids, too!!! Lucky for Harley he's with us now. He's kinda skinny, but he's very sweet and laid back. You can see we're set up for gettin-to-know-you mode, but we already all play together, especially outside. Unfortunately for Harley, he just had his "procedure" yesterday, so he can't really run around and play yet, but he sure wants to! Just leash walking for a little while still, brah. Guess what little Theo's all excited about? We got a new camera!!! WOOHOO!!! Finally. The human's been planning to get one for such a loooooong time now. At the risk of sounding like a commercial--Ashton Kutcher we ain't--we love our Nikon cameras! No, we didn't get a super special digital SLR (yet!), just another little CoolPix. This one's the most recent, hot off the press: Nikon S640.

Okay, we do love Nikon, but we're not blindly loyal. Our last CoolPix really sucked--we loved our first one, the very first version. Decision's still out on this one. It's definitely fast enough (though not quite fast enough to keep up with us at full speed). Anyway, we had a beautiful fall day today to test out the new toy.
(BTW, color is a little cool with this camera. And, as you can, see images are a little too contrasty. All these shots were corrected in Photoshop.)

The new camera doesn't handle low light so well. We prefer natural light to flash (as with these pics); flash works okay but is stark, and colors are too cool. Still, not so bad with after-the-fact touch ups. Maybe we can get the human to read the manual--that might help.

Foster bro Tanner went home to his family this week. You might recall that Tan Man came to stay with us when his owner was deployed to Iraq (and the owner's wife dumped the dog at the SPCA--that's a longer story...). For a while, we weren't sure that Tanner's family was going to welcome him back, but they decided they would (at least the husband and two kids decided). Even though we're very happy for Tanner, we do miss him. Hopefully, he's laying in a warm bed or running in a big yard being his goofy, spoiled self. Be well and happy, brah, you always have a place here...

Why is it always about Narra?! This fall has definitely been all about her. Now, we've even driven all the way out to Ohio for her. You see, we've been attending the German Shepherd Dog Club of America National Specialty for the last five days. The "national" is an annual event where German Shepherd Dogs from all over the country get together to compete in performance events (herding, agility, obedience, rally) and conformation. Of course, sistah is all about performing... She started the week off great in herding--even though one judge thought she was channeling "the wolf" too much--and earned her first title in it. Agility hasn't gone so well, but she has another day of that. Plus, she has rally to do, too!

What about US?! Yeah, we, Tuchuck and Theo, are along for the ride, and that's kinda fun, but we want to do cool stuff, too! We don't get to run around and play enough while waiting for sistah to take care of her bizness. Finally, today, we got to go running for a change. In honor of the boys of summer (Go, Phillies!), we went to Wiggley Field, a local off-leash dog park! Falls colors were looking awesome, and Theo enjoyed his first evuh dog park. We had the whole place to ourselves, for the most part. A couple GSDs from the trial eventually showed up, but we didn't really play with them--Tuchuck was even mean to them because he thought one was being mean to Theo! Anyway, we got our yayas out, so that was quite a relief. Weather hasn't been great (super cold and wet!), but we don't mind--just need to run!

Of course, we like hotels, too. Little Theo's earned his van legs and has become a roadtrip pro (the human even bought him a fancy new crate pad). If we didn't miss Jackson, Rousseau, Angel, and Tanner so much, we'd probably be good driving on for a bit more. The human for sure doesn't want to go back to work. The Corgador Giveth

We didn't deserve it, but Wally T. Corgador sent us a great gift: ICE CREAM!!! Actually, he sent the gift belatedly for Narra's birthday, and, of course, we all got to share! By all rights, we kinda deserve it, it's not our fault that our human has neglected our blog. Not only has he got himself super busy, he's roped in Narra and Tuchuck (and occasionally Theo) into the madness. You see, Narra will be competing in the German Shepherd Dog nationals next week, and she's been training and trialing to get ready. She's entered in agility, herding, and rally. Whew. The rest of us are glad we don't have to work that hard. Speaking of, the human does have a job, too. Sheesh, can't a dog get a break around here?

Anyway, here's a little sumpin sumpin from our impromptu ice cream party this afternoon. We apologize to our friends for not having visited blogs in a while--we'll be back, promise!!

A Day at the Agility Trial

Check it out! Look who hopped on the Buddy mobile and spent a day at the agility trial! Yup, little Theo got his groove on and ventured forth to meet the world. He wasn't entirely comfortable, but his curiosity and excitement balanced out the anxiety (for the most part). He made amazing progress today (even though the human may have overloaded him a bit). Don't worry, little man, the world's a wondrous place--way to go!

When we arrived, Tuchuck gave Theo the lowdown on what goes on at an agility trial.

Lots of BC cousins running around today. Theo was engrossed!
Nothing like relaxing in the van after an event-filled day. Ahhh.

eYewatch Friday: Birthday edition

Narra celebrated a birthday this week! She's a matronly six years old. Hahahaha!!! Okay, yeah, she's not really matronly. :) In fact, she got some pretty cool stuff on her special day for her activities. She got a new tug toy for agility called a flappy. It's pretty cool, but we have yet to see how long it lasts. Our sistah ain't dainty, in case ya didn't notice. ;)
She's a Babe! She also got a suburban, bougie version of a shepherd's crook (wait, is that really for her or the human??). It's functional, we suppose, but not long in the looks department--unlike our sistah. We'll try to post pictures soon. For now, that'll do.

But watch out, boys, she ain't the sharin kind.

You guessed it, Tuchuck and Theo went to the vet today. Nothing serious, just a check up and picking up some meds. Tuchuck was mostly along for moral support. We hear little Theo rocked the clinic with his charming self. Who knew? He did let people know when boundaries were crossed, but, all in all, the little cookie face did good. :) Guess what, he even rode in the van without expending any bodily fluids, waste, or otherwise unrecognizable matter! Woohoo! Way to go, buddy!

But, wait, look what else they had at the clinic. The T-Boyz were very curious... But, no, it is not their pal Bruce.(Did anyone get the Philly reference in our title? All we can say is, "BOO, Eagles!")

eYewatch Friday: Belated edition

Look at Tuchuck's big eyes! Guess what he's lookin at? He and Narra went to a Rally trial today and Narra earned more ribbons! Nah, Tuchuck's not looking at the ribbons, he's checkin out the totally awesome cookies Narra won, too. Cookies for the cookie face! The rest of us have to admit to being more impressed with the cookies also. (We were also kinda impressed at the ridonculous hour the human got up to get to the show on time... yup, we said ON TIME!) Bring home the spoils, Narra, just wake us up when you get home.

Red Ribbons!

Red Ribbon isn't just a favorite bakery, it's the theme for Tuchuck's agility debut weekend! That's right, we trained the human very well: he blew off his originally scheduled plans to enter another day of the agility trial (thanks to day-of-trial entries--woohoo!). Both T and Narra got to play some more! What does that have to do with red ribbons, you ask? Well, in addition, to his second place on Friday, Tuchuck earned another one on Sunday! (He earned a fourth place, too!) Not a bad debut, huh? Three runs total: two second places, one fourth, and, best yet, three qualifying scores! Way to go, Tuchuck!!! Sistah Narra never had such a weekend, but she did pretty well on Sunday, too. She actually earned two fourth places out of three runs, but no qualifying scores. (Not really sure how that works in CPE, but we'll take it.)

To add to the merriment, Tuchuck's impressive performance was witnessed by our own little posse. Family friends who were visiting the human's parental units all wanted to see agility! Although it wasn't part of their reunion plans, they seemed to have a good time checkin out the trial. And we appreciated the fandom! Go, Tuchuck, go!!!

It was a busy weekend! The human took a brief interlude from agility good times to help out Deb, a young, female white German Shepherd Dog in need of a home. In fact, a lot of people helped out Deb who needed to be transported from Maryland north to New Hampshire. She's in a great foster home now and waiting to be adopted from Echo Dogs White Shepherd Rescue. Any takers? She's awesome! Tell your friends!

He's being very nonchalant about it, but Tuchuck rocked his agility debut today! For his first ever agility trial, Tuchuck ran clean and beautiful--and earned a second place! Sistah Narra, the veteran--ahem--ran, too, but we're not gonna talk about that. Yay, Tuchuck, you're in for a lot of fun times now, brah!!
